This young couple desired more space in their two-bedroom, one bath home to accommodate their growing family. In their new primary suite, they had three top priorities: closet space, closet space, and closet space! After crowding around a pedestal sink for five years, any upgrade in the bathroom space would be a welcome addition. A roughly 400SF addition was built off the rear of the home, utilizing the footprint of an existing closest to create an internal hallway to the primary suite. The new 76SF closet is double-loaded with almost 30 linear feet of full-height, custom closet storage. The primary bathroom is tucked around the back side of the den to give more usable space to the bedroom area. New vanity cabinets in the bathroom provide nearly 12’ of storage including a pull-out drawer for a laundry basket. Quartz countertops go wall to wall with two undermount vanity sinks incorporated. Each sink is flanked by two sconces and a custom-cut mirror with chrome metal edging. On the opposite side of the bathroom lives the spacious walk-in shower and a private toilet room. A pocket door leading to the toilet room allows for additional light to flow into the bathroom since an open door slab doesn’t sit in front of a window when the toilet room is not in use. The 6’ long shower has a marble hex tile floor and floor to ceiling subway tile walls with an integrated storage niche. The floating shower bench is anchored to two walls while the remaining two have a thickened turn-down edge with mitered details. This gives the bench a proper proportion for the large shower and allows the mounting hardware to remain out of sight. Ensuring proper waterproofing details were achieved with this unique bench detail was something builder and tile sub collaborated on together during construction.

Because of where the addition was located in relation to the existing home, the window behind the TV in the den bookcases needed to be removed. This presented the homeowners with the opportunity to properly mount the TV and address some of the aesthetic issues the clients had with the existing setup. The bookcases were rebuilt from the countertop up to the ceiling with custom wood shelving and painted to match the lower half. On the exterior of the home, the existing siding was matched on the addition to help it blend in from the street.

The new addition necessitated new HVAC equipment which was relocated from a closet in the kitchen up into the attic space of the addition. To take advantage of the space the furnace left behind the refrigerator was relocated into the utility closet and a new upper and lower cabinet were added in its place. Care was taken to match the cabinets from the existing kitchen so new blended with old in an undetectable way. The lower cabinet incorporated a trash and recycling pullout and added much needed storage to the kitchen space. A new black walnut butcherblock countertop complemented the existing carrara marble countertops in the kitchen.

After the project was complete, these homeowners were left with a 3 bedroom, 2 bath home much better suited to meet their needs for many years to come!
